100 is the grit that decides the shape: it no longer digs and does not yet polish, it draws. The STALEKS SMART 40 mineral file in grit 100/100 puts it on both faces, so you can run through the left hand and the right without ever hunting for the correct side or opening a second file when the first loads up. A 162 x 25 mm crescent, grey mineral treated with stearate over thin foam. Disposable file, single use, pack of 25.
Between the moment the bulk comes off and the moment the surface gets ready for colour, there is a stage nothing replaces: giving the nail its geometry. That is the territory of grit 100, and the STALEKS SMART 40 crescent mineral nail file in grit 100/100 offers it on both faces. One abrasive, one feel, from the first finger to the tenth. A 162 x 25 mm crescent, grey mineral from the SMART line by Staleks, pack of 25.
A coarser grit tears at the product and rules out a precise line. A finer one strokes the surface but no longer moves enough volume to correct a sidewall. 100 sits exactly between the two: it advances enough to straighten a bulging lateral, slowly enough for you to watch the shape arrive and stop in the right place.
So this is the grit of squares that must stay square, of almonds that must stay symmetrical, of ballerinas whose two sides must fall at the same angle. On gel, polygel and acrylic it behaves the same way, with no runaway.
Plenty of files marry two grits to cover two stages. This one takes the opposite decision: give the whole board to a single stage and hand it twice the surface. That is no small thing when the same shaping is repeated all day long.
In practice an abrasive stops biting well before it is worn out, simply because dust has filled its relief. With 100 on both sides, the answer is a movement of the fingers: the file flips, the second face picks up at the same bite, the shaping carries on without the stroke breaking.
The hard part of a full set is not getting one nail right, it is getting the tenth to match the first. Working the whole hand with a single abrasive removes one variable: the rate of cut stays constant, comparing two neighbouring fingers becomes reliable, and you stop blaming your hand for what came from the tool.
Studios that kit out several stations get the same benefit across the team. One reference on the desk, and the shapes look alike from one seat to the next.
The half-moon outline is not decoration. Its straight edge is the one you present to the free edge to set length and hold a clean corner. Its curved edge follows the opposite line, the one rising towards the cuticle area and running along the lateral folds, where a straight file always ends up touching skin.
Across its 162 x 25 mm the hand finds two grips: centred for the long travel, near a tip for short corrections in the corners. The file pivots rather than slides, and it is that rotation which writes the curve.
The mineral abrasive of the SMART line is grey, a shade proper to this series where white signals the EXPERT range. It is protected by a stearate coating that spaces out the moments when shaping dust packs the grit.
The board is not a block of foam but a panel covered with a thin layer of foam: enough to cushion, too little to swallow the stroke. The file stays stiff under pressure, which is what a straight free edge requires.
This file speaks to nail technicians whose diary lines up builds and infills, and to training centres that want every student to shape with the same abrasive. It is not meant to finish a nail or to prepare a natural plate: for that you drop to a softer grit in the series.
The pack of 25 is the only format of the SMART 40 range, and it lands right here: a fresh file per client, binned after the service, with no disinfection and no second outing. Twenty-five shapings ready on the desk.
