What hand sharpening changes

A machine-sharpened edge is regular but coarse at the scale of a cuticle. It crushes before it cuts, which leaves a ragged edge that frays over the following days and causes hangnails. Hand sharpening produces a finer edge and a clean cut: the cuticle is severed sharply, the outline stays neat for longer, and the client does not come back with torn skin.

The fineness of the blades

Twenty-one millimetres is short, and deliberately so. A long blade loses precision near the cuticle and forces you to work blind along the sides of the nail. A short blade is controlled from the fingertips and lets you follow the lateral sidewall without risking the fold.

How to proceed

Storage matters
