Telling the four near-blacks apart

The Basic collection has four and they all look alike in photographs. Woodland leans towards brown burgundy, Iris towards violet plum, Grapes towards violet black, Jam towards a slightly plum black. Ristretto is frankly brown. In a catalogue they are indistinguishable; laid on tips and looked at in daylight, each reveals its cast. It is exactly the kind of family where a physical display is indispensable.

How to apply it

pH Bond HEYLOVE dries the plate, Ultra Bond HEYLOVE goes on the edge and sets on its own, Rubber Base HEYLOVE Clear cures in 30 to 60 seconds. Shake, then a single veil of Grapes is usually enough, cured for one minute. There is no need for a second coat on a shade this dense, unless an irregularity shows.

On which nails

Very dark shades visually lengthen a short nail and refine the hand, which makes them a particularly sound choice on bitten, stubby or unevenly regrown nails. On long nails the effect becomes spectacular but demands an impeccable outline.

When to suggest it

A winter and evening shade, but also an interesting alternative to pure black for a client who finds it too harsh. The violet nuance softens without anyone being able to name it.

Silver decoration and fine white linework stand out clearly on this ground. Gold, warmer, clashes with the violet cast and weakens the coherence of the set.
